Valtrex (valacyclovir hydrochloride) is used to work against herpes simplex virus. This drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December 15, 1995. It works by stopping the reproduction of the virus. These antiviral agents block viral reproduction. They help to keep the virus inactive. Valtrex is an antiviral agent used to treat herpes zoster or shingles and herpes simplex or cold sores. There is not a cure for herpes and no drug is known to prevent further infection.

Uses of Valtrex

 

Valtrex is one of the many antiviral medications which are used to suppress herpes outbreaks or to treat herpes when they occur. The antiviral medications are available in the pill form and can be used for treatment of genital herpes. These may notably reduce the outbreaks and the time it the time it takes for them to heal.

 

Valtrex Directions

 

Valtrex must be taken orally, twice a day for acute outbreaks and once daily as a maintenance dose if required. Doses must not be skipped as much as possible. It is also not recommended to stop the medication too soon so that its effectiveness will not be compromised.

 

Valtrex Side Effects

 

Known side effects of this drug may include nausea, headache, and loss of appetite, weakness, stomach pain and dizziness. These may occur during the earlier stage of taking the medication and shall eventually fade as your body gets accustomed to the drug. However, when any of these side effects persist to occur for a longer period already, inform your doctor right away for roper medical advice.

 

 

Valtrex Precautions

 

If you suffer from a kidney disease, any blood disorder or any allergies, you should likewise inform your physician about it. Use of this medication shall then be recommended with caution and at a lower dose only. When used via intravenous administration, the risk for kidney problem increases. It can cause the blood at the injection site to clot. In rare instances, it can cause central nervous system complications. This drug should only be used by a pregnant woman if really necessary. Talk to your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, especially cimetidine or probenecid.

 

 

Missed Dose of Valtrex

 

If for any reason you miss a dose of Valtrex, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Never take two doses at once to catch up.

Valtrex should be started within two days of a rash's appearance to be most effective.
