Trazodone

Trazodone

Trazodone is prescribed for the treatment of symptoms related to depression such as feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or sadness. Trazadone helps patients who struggle with fatigue, sleeping too much, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, loss of interest in daily life, and changes of appetite; all related to depression.

Trazodone Directions

Follow your doctor's instructions when taking Trazadone. Take this medication with a full eight ounce glass of water. You should also take Trazadone with a snack or a meal to increase the absorption of the medication and to lower the incidence of dizziness. Do not discontinue this medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well. Some patients will not see improvement until several weeks into Trazodone treatment.

Trazodone Precautions

Trazadone can cause fatigue and lightheadedness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how you will react to Trazodone. Dizziness usually occurs when patients sit up after lying down. Sit up slowly to prevent dizziness or falling. Do not consume alcohol while taking Trazodone as it will increase dizziness and drowsiness.

Trazodone Side Effects

Some side effects may rarely occur, including allergic reactions, prolongued or painful erections, irregular pulse, or chest pains. Get immediate medical attention if you experience any of those symptoms. Other more common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, dreaming, headache, dry mouth, upset stomach, constipation, blurred vision, tremors, or diarrhea. Talk to your doctor if side effects become bothersome.

Trazodone Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medications you are currently taking before beginning Trazodone. You should especially tell your doctor if you are taking digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), phenytoin (Dilantin), a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate), or warfarin (Coumadin).

Missed Dose of Trazodone

If you miss a dose of Trazodone, take it as soon as you notice. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the normal dosage. Do not double the dosage to compensate for a missed dose. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist for more information on missed dosages.

Trazodone Overdose

If an overdose is suspected, get immediate medical attention. Symptoms could include irregular pulse, respiratory distress, stomach upset, seizures, loss of consciousness, painful erection, or in some cases, death.
