Prozac

Prozac or fluoxetine is a drug which is used for treatment of depression, eating disorders, severe premenstrual problems as well as obsessive compulsive disorder. This drug belongs to the group which is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs.

Uses of Prozac
This drug helps restore chemical balance in the brain to destroy signs of depression. It is also effective for treating OCD, premenstrual disorders, and eating disorders.
Prozac Directions
Prozac can be taken once daily with or without food or as advised by the doctor. The dosage shall depend on your medical condition and your response to therapy. This medication should be supervised by your doctor especially if you have a certain medical condition. Dosage may be increased depending on the advised of your doctor. It is recommended that you do not discontinue usage of the drug when you already manifest improvement unless otherwise advised by your doctor. The drug may give its full benefits after four weeks of continuous usage.
Prozac Side Effects
Known side effects of Prozac are nausea, headache, insomnia, drying of the mouth, sweating, and upset stomach. Other tolerable and milder side effects include loss of appetite, weight loss, severe mood swings, decreased sexual desire, tremors and similar symptoms of flu. More serious side effects include vision problems, swelling of the mouth or tongue, trouble swallowing, prolonged erection and significant changes in sexual abilities. Loss of consciousness and palpitations are very serious side effects but are unlikely to occur. Allergic reactions may also occur such as itching, rashes, swelling, dizziness and difficulty in breathing. When any of these occurs, you must notify your doctor immediately.
Prozac Precautions
You must inform your doctor of your medical history more especially if you have heart ailments, diabetes, liver problems, kidney problems, instances of seizures, or any allergies before you take this medication. Since Prozac can make you drowsy, you may not be able to perform several activities which require alertness. Alcohol intake must also be lowered if cannot be avoided. Precautionary measures must be taken when you have diabetes, liver disease, or alcohol dependency because liquid preparations of Prozac may contain sugar and small quantities of alcohol. If you are pregnant, Prozac may be used only under your doctor’s close supervision. Prozac can also be excreted to the breast milk thus, breastfeeding while under this medication is not recommended to avoid risking the health of your baby.
Prozac Drug Interactions
When Prozac is taken with other medication, serious drug interactions may occur. Taking MAO inhibitors such as furazolidone, linezolid and the like must be avoided within two weeks prior and after taking Prozac medications. Taking thioridazine must likewise be avoided within 5 weeks prior and after taking Prozac medications. It is recommended to ask your doctor for more information. Furthermore, use of Prozac is not recommended for weight loss treatment. Inform your doctor if you have other antidepressant medications especially if these medications contain drowsiness causing ingredients. Since Prozac may contain sugar in its preparations, if you are taking anti diabetes medications, your dosage of said drugs might need adjustments when Prozac is used or discontinued. Discontinuing any medication shall be depending on your doctor’s advice.
Missed Dose of Prozac
If you miss a dose of Prozac, take it as soon as you remember. If it is already time for another dose, resume taking your regular dosage. Do not take two dosages of Prozac at once. Contact your Pharmacist for more information.
Prozac Overdose
If a Prozac overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention or contact your local poison control.
