Most back pain can be divided into one of four categories, or some combination of the categories.  These categories are neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain and tailbone pain.  Since the majority of back pain is due to inflammation, it is not absolutely necessary to always use medication to help dull the pain, but it may be an effective remedy to quickly reduce the amount of pain you are suffering.

Muscle pain can be attributed to a few different causes, including muscle spasms, pulled muscles and muscle imbalances.  More research needs to be done in the study of this particular form of back pain for results to be sure.  For those with lower back pain, the synovial joints may be the source of the pain.  With this type of back pain, the tissue that serves as a cushion between bones, helping them to move over each other smoothly, becomes displaced or pinched resulting in great discomfort.  Disc herniation and degenerative disc disorders are another source of the back pain common to so many people.

There are many forms of therapy available to relieve pain due to back problems.  Heat therapy is one form of treatment that many have had success with, especially with mild to moderate back pain.  For most people, moist heat or continuous low level heat is the best option to help to soothe the pain.  Physical therapy involving special stretching exercises is another excellent way to help cope with pain caused by back problems.  Massage therapy, especially from an experienced therapist, is another way to provide short term relief if you are suffering from back pain.

Medications are another viable option and there are several on the market that work to varying degrees, depending on the exact type of back pain you are experiencing.  Muscle relaxants are one of the most popular medications used to alleviate the pain caused by back problems.  Muscle relaxants work in a variety of different ways but the majority of them block some of the functions of the central nervous system in order to reduce pain.  Acupuncture is another form of treatment that many have found to be helpful in dealing with back pain.

Educating yourself on the causes of back pain and the wide variety of treatments is an excellent way to start helping yourself.  You may find that you are interested in some of the newer, more cutting edge forms of treatment for back pain.  Whatever the case, back pain is something that can be managed successfully with effort and the right approach.
